Super Falcons Secure Olympic Qualification After 16-Year Hiatus

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Nigerian women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, have secured their qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Nigeria emerged victorious over South Africa, clinching a hard-fought 1-0 aggregate win in the Olympic qualifiers.
The crucial goal came from the boot of Rasheedat Ajibade, who confidently converted a penalty in the first leg of the qualifiers held in Abuja.
Despite a spirited effort from both sides in the return leg in South Africa, the scoreline remained goalless, sealing Nigeria’s passage to the prestigious Summer Olympics.
The victory marks a significant milestone for the Super Falcons, as it signifies their return to the Olympic stage after a 16-year absence.
With their qualification, Nigeria has once again stamped its authority as a dominant force in African women’s football.
The encounter between Nigeria and South Africa carried historical significance, with both teams having a rich footballing rivalry. Since their memorable 7-1 victory against South Africa in a 1995 World Cup qualifier in Johannesburg, the two sides have clashed numerous times on the football field.
Out of the 24 meetings between them, Nigeria emerged victorious in 15 matches, while five ended in draws, and South Africa claimed victory on four occasions.
