Peter Obi Criticizes Budget Increase, Calls for Transparency

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s decision to raise the 2025 budget from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion.

In a post on his X account, Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, argued that the increase, attributed to higher revenues, is unjustifiable without a clear breakdown of expenditures to support the rise.

He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, urging the executive to provide detailed information on how the revenue generated will be allocated. Obi stressed that the funds should be directed toward critical areas such as education, healthcare, security, and poverty alleviation.

Obi also reminded Nigerians that they are still awaiting a comprehensive report on the execution and spending of the Renewed Hope budget passed in December 2023, to ensure it has been properly used for the country’s development and the well-being of its citizens.

He further called on members of the National Assembly to take the opportunity to release the full details of the previous year’s budget to the public.

“As we work toward passing the Budget of Restoration for 2025, let us uphold openness, accountability, and the welfare of the Nigerian people. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the future of our great nation,” Obi said.
