Northern Leaders Plan Summit to Shape Region’s Political Future Ahead of 2027 Elections

As the 2027 general elections approach, northern leaders are moving to host a significant meeting to determine the region’s political trajectory.
The initiative, spearheaded by the League of Northern Democrats (LND), was announced during a gathering in Abuja on Tuesday.
Key figures expected to attend the upcoming summit include Vice President Kashim Shettima, governors, former heads of state, and lawmakers from the northern region. The summit, which will take place in Kaduna, will focus on the region’s political future, economic development, and security challenges.
Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, the Protem Chairman of the LND and former governor of Kano State, highlighted the purpose of the summit, stating, “This summit will serve as a platform for discussing the region’s political future, economic development, and security challenges. It will bring together key leaders, thinkers, and influencers to chart a new course for the North.”
In an interview, Shekarau emphasized the group’s concern about the progress of the region, particularly the ongoing security issues. He mentioned that the LND plans to produce a comprehensive document outlining the region’s challenges and potential solutions, which will serve as a guide for any political figure seeking support from the North.
The LND’s communiqué, signed by the convener Umar Ardo and interim secretary Emmanuel Jime, expressed the group’s commitment to unifying the North and reestablishing it as a dominant force in national politics. They emphasized that this unity is crucial for positioning the North as a leading force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
This initiative marks a significant step in the North’s preparations for the 2027 elections, reflecting the region’s desire to address its pressing issues and assert its influence on the national stage.
