A new law prohibiting the sale of “ghost plates” in New York State will take effect this weekend. These obscured or unreadable license plates are often used by drivers to evade tolls, costing New York City an estimated $200 million each year.
Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine noted that the sale of such plates and related products has become widespread on platforms like Craigslist and TikTok. In response, the MTA and NYPD have conducted multiple crackdowns on toll evaders and vehicles with ghost plates since May.
