Atlético Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals despite a 2-1 home defeat to FC Barcelona, advancing 3-2 on aggregate after a dramatic quarter-final clash in Madrid.
Barcelona made a blistering start at the Metropolitano, with Lamine Yamal opening the scoring early after capitalising on a defensive lapse. Ferran Torres then added a second with a clinical finish to level the tie on aggregate within the opening 25 minutes.
However, Atletico responded through Ademola Lookman, whose composed finish restored the hosts’ aggregate advantage and ultimately proved decisive.
The goal came after a swift move down the flank, with Marcos Llorente finding Lookman unmarked in the box to slot home and swing momentum back in favour of Diego Simeone’s side.
Barcelona pushed for a third on the night but were denied by goalkeeper Juan Musso, who produced key saves, including a crucial stop to prevent Fermín López from putting the visitors ahead.
Despite the defeat, Atletico progressed to the last four, having secured a 2-0 first-leg advantage at the Camp Nou.
In another quarter-final clash, Paris Saint-Germain advanced comfortably after defeating Liverpool FC 2-0 at Anfield to seal a 4-0 aggregate victory. Ousmane Dembélé scored twice in the second half to confirm qualification.
PSG will now face the winner between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, while Atletico Madrid await the outcome of the tie involving Arsenal FC and Sporting CP.
The result marks another major statement from Atletico this season, having now eliminated Barcelona from two competitions.
