Nashville International Airport is moving toward a new name honoring late country music icon Dolly Parton after the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the proposal Friday.

The six-member board voted 6-0 to begin the process of modifying the airport’s name in recognition of Parton and her legacy.

Parton died on August 25 at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer, according to her publicist. She was laid to rest three days later in a private burial in Nashville, according to her great-niece, Lainey Mae Parton.

While the airport authority has approved moving forward with the renaming process, officials said a final name has not yet been selected.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority said it is working with relevant parties to determine how Parton’s name and legacy will be incorporated into the airport’s identity.

“We are grateful for the tremendous support and enthusiasm from our community and Dolly’s fans around the world,” the authority said in a statement.

Officials said more definitive plans, including details about the implementation of the name change, will be announced in the coming months.

The decision represents a major step toward permanently honoring Parton in Nashville, the city closely associated with her decades-long career and influence on country music.
