NAFDAC Seizes ₦2bn Counterfeit Alcohol in Lagos, Arrests Two

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit alcoholic beverages valued at more than ₦2 billion during a raid on illegal stores at the Trade Fair Market in Lagos.

The agency disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X handle on Tuesday, following an operation by its Investigation and Enforcement Directorate.

NAFDAC said the operation was launched after credible intelligence exposed illegal activities within the market complex. Operatives reportedly discovered more than 20 illegal stores concealed in makeshift parking spaces.

According to the agency, suspects were allegedly caught blending counterfeit versions of popular alcoholic beverage brands, revalidating expired and unsafe drinks for resale, and storing prohibited imported products.

Two suspects were arrested, while the seized beverages were evacuated from the complex.

NAFDAC warned that counterfeit, expired and unsafe alcoholic drinks pose serious risks to public health, urging consumers to remain vigilant and report suspected illegal production, product revalidation and sales.

The agency provided its complaints hotline, 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322), for members of the public to report suspicious activities.
