Malaysia’s pardons board, chaired by the country’s king, agreed Friday to allow jailed former Prime Minister Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, according to the prime minister’s legal affairs department.

Najib, 73, served as Malaysia’s prime minister from 2009 to 2018 and has been imprisoned following his conviction on corruption charges connected to the multibillion-dollar 1Malaysia Development Berhad, or 1MDB, financial scandal.

The state investment fund was co-founded by Najib while he was in office and later became the center of investigations into the alleged misappropriation of billions of dollars.

Under the pardons board’s decision, Najib will be permitted to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug. 23, 2028, the legal affairs department said in a statement.

The decision represents a significant change in the conditions of Najib’s sentence, four years after his imprisonment over one of Malaysia’s most prominent corruption cases.
