The former boyfriend of Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who killed her by setting her on fire, has died from burns he sustained during the attack, a Kenyan hospital official has confirmed.
Dickson Ndiema ambushed Cheptegei, a marathon runner, as she was returning home from church more than a week ago. He doused her with petrol and set her ablaze. The two were reportedly in conflict over a small piece of land in north-west Kenya, where Cheptegei lived and trained.
Ndiema passed away on Monday night in the intensive care unit of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where he was being treated for burns covering more than 30% of his body.
Rebecca Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries last Thursday after suffering burns to 80% of her body in the attack four days earlier.
