Richard Allen, convicted of the 2017 murders of Indiana teens Abigail “Abby” Williams and Liberty “Libby” German, was sentenced on Friday to 130 years in prison, with 65 years for each murder to be served consecutively.
Dressed in an orange jumpsuit, gray sweatshirt, and ankle chains, Allen appeared in court without any family present; the seats reserved for them remained empty. The convicted killer showed no reaction as the sentence was handed down.
Last month, a jury found Allen guilty on all charges, including:
- Felony murder for killing Abby Williams while attempting to commit kidnapping.
- Felony murder for killing Libby German while attempting to commit kidnapping.
- Two counts of murder for knowingly taking the lives of both teenagers.
During the trial, a gag order prevented the families of Abby and Libby from speaking publicly. However, at the sentencing, they finally voiced their pain and grief.
Libby’s grandmother, Becky Patty, said, “I can never change my choice to let Libby and Abby go to the trails that day.” Addressing Allen directly, she added, “I hope he lives with the same fear he caused Abby and Libby in the last hour of their lives.”
Libby’s mother, Carrie Timmons, described the emotional toll Allen’s actions have had on her, saying, “I was blind that such evil existed.” She shared how her family struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, guilt, and anxiety. The family has stopped celebrating Libby’s birthday, as it has become too painful. “Libby would be 22 years old now,” she said.
Libby’s grandfather, Mike Patty, delivered a powerful message to Allen, saying, “You could’ve taken accountability.”
The sentencing marks a significant moment for the families and the Delphi community, which has been haunted by the brutal murders of Abby and Libby for more than six years. While the court’s decision brings a measure of justice, the emotional scars remain for those who loved the two young girls.
