Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has issued a formal apology to the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagun, and the acting National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, over alleged defamatory remarks he made during a podcast interview.
In the interview, Adeyanju accused Damagun of serving tea and Anyanwu of serving ‘Kilishi’ at the residence of Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. He also alleged that Damagun and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, were acting as moles for Tinubu within the PDP.
Following threats of civil and criminal litigation by Damagun and Anyanwu, Adeyanju’s law firm, Deji Adeyanju & Partners, retracted the statements and issued an apology in a letter dated December 6.
The letter, signed by Zainab Otega, stated:
“These statements were not intended to defame your clients, and any perception of defamation in the said statements is regretted and withdrawn with apologies.”
Adeyanju clarified that his remarks were part of a broader conversation about the need for stronger opposition from the PDP. He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for Nigeria’s betterment, urging leaders to prioritize national interests over personal gains.
