Cape Verde Reach Knockout Stage on Historic World Cup Debut

Cape Verde have etched their name into FIFA World Cup history after becoming the smallest nation by population to qualify for the knockout stage of the men’s tournament.

The island nation sealed a place in the Round of 32 following a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in their final Group H fixture in Houston, finishing the group stage unbeaten.

Making their World Cup debut, Cape Verde finished second in the group with three points, behind Spain and ahead of two-time world champions Uruguay, whose defeat to Spain confirmed their elimination alongside Saudi Arabia.

The African side had already captured global attention by holding Spain to a 0-0 draw before producing another impressive performance in a 2-2 stalemate against Uruguay.

Goalkeeper Vozinha paid tribute to the team’s resilience after the historic achievement.

“We are small, but we have big hearts and we are fighters.”

The 40-year-old shot-stopper emerged as one of Cape Verde’s standout performers throughout the group stage, particularly during the memorable draw against Spain.

Following the match against Saudi Arabia, players and officials huddled around a mobile phone on the pitch to monitor the closing stages of Spain’s victory over Uruguay. As soon as the final whistle confirmed their qualification, jubilant celebrations broke out among the squad and their supporters.

Former Spain midfielder Juan Mata commended Cape Verde’s achievement, saying the team had demonstrated its quality consistently across all three group matches rather than relying on a single surprise result.

With a population of about 525,000, Cape Verde qualified for the World Cup ahead of Cameroon and will now face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32 on July 3 in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Head coach Bubista said the team’s remarkable campaign has brought global attention to the country and expressed confidence ahead of the daunting clash with Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

“To us, nothing is impossible,” Bubista said after securing qualification while draped in Cape Verde’s national flag.

Cape Verde’s historic progression stands as one of the biggest stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the tournament debutants continuing to defy expectations as they prepare to battle Argentina for a place in the last 16.
