ADC Faces Internal Rift Over Atiku–Amaechi 2027 Ticket Arrangement

Fresh internal tensions have emerged within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) barely a week after the party unveiled its 2027 presidential ticket, raising questions about cohesion ahead of the election season.

At the centre of the disagreement is the reported nomination of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Party insiders say the announcement has triggered divisions among supporters of both figures, with some factions within Atiku’s camp reportedly opposing Amaechi’s selection and pushing for a replacement.

The controversy follows a June 5 announcement by ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, who stated that Amaechi had been chosen as Atiku’s running mate in what he described as a “unity and rescue” ticket for Nigeria. However, the declaration has since sparked pushback from sections of the party, particularly within blocs formerly aligned with the Peoples Democratic Party.

Some critics are said to question Amaechi’s political alignment, citing his perceived closeness to allies of former President Muhammadu Buhari, while others fear his independent influence could limit their role in a future administration.

There are also claims that supporters of Amaechi have advised him to challenge the party’s presidential primary process if his name is not formally uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission portal by June 27.

Despite the tensions, Atiku’s media aide, Abdulrasheed Shehu, has dismissed reports of a breakdown in relations, insisting the arrangement remains intact.

“Atiku/Amaechi is settled. His Excellency is on a short business trip. Once he returns, Amaechi will be officially unveiled as the VP candidate in a few days,” he said.

The developments highlight mounting internal challenges for the ADC as it seeks to present a united front going into the next general election cycle.
