No less than 2,295 teachers have been killed somewhere in the range of 2009 and 2020 in the continuous struggle in the northeastern territories of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.
The Borno Field Officer for the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund, Nguyen Phuong, revealed this in an electronic mail interview.
She said, “Historically, helpless interest in education in North-East Nigeria has been exacerbated by the furnished clash and insurrection, because of which 1,400 schools were harmed, more than 1,000,000 youngsters constrained out of school, and 2,295 teachers killed somewhere in the range of 2009 and 2020.
“All schools in Borno State were closed from December 2013 to June 2015 due to the escalation of the conflict while in Yobe and Adamawa states; schools have also been closed for shorter periods on an ad hoc basis.”
However, a record showed that no fewer than 271 students were currently being held by bandits in parts of the country.
The students being held include 121 students abducted from Salihu Tanko Islamic School, Tegina in Niger State, who are still being held by bandits after 70 days; 70 students from Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri in Kebbi State despite spending 52 days in captivity and 80 school children from Bethel Baptist School, Kaduna State.
This is as 126 schools have remained shut in five northern states.
The five states where some schools have remained closed are Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, and Yobe.
The Kaduna State Government had on Friday announced the indefinite closure of no fewer than 5,000 schools in the state due to the activities of the military to flush out bandits from the state.
Information gathered revealed that in Sokoto State, no fewer than 16 boarding schools were shut.
