North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile Toward East Sea, South Korean Military Says

North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the East Sea on Saturday morning, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

South Korea’s military said it detected a single ballistic missile fired from the Wonsan area on North Korea’s eastern coast at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time.

The missile traveled more than 700 kilometers, or about 435 miles, before coming down, officials said. South Korean and U.S. authorities are conducting a detailed analysis to determine the missile’s exact type, flight characteristics and other technical specifications.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, South Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies had been monitoring developments related to the launch from its early stages and shared information throughout the operation.

South Korea’s military said it remains on heightened alert and is closely monitoring North Korean activities for signs of additional launches or other military action.

Officials also said Seoul is maintaining its combined defense posture with the United States and remains prepared to respond to any further provocations.

The launch adds to continuing tensions on the Korean Peninsula amid international concern over North Korea’s ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs.
