The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State has disowned former governorship aspirant Abayomi Hunye, who is challenging the candidacy of the party’s flag bearer, Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.
Hunye had last weekend declared that he remained in the 2027 governorship race and unveiled his running mate, while also rejecting the APC governorship primary that produced Adeola as its candidate.
At the primary held in May, Adeola was declared the winner after securing 304,055 votes out of 305,287 accredited voters. The Chairman of the Ogun State Governorship Electoral Committee, Wale Ohu, said Hunye, his only challenger, scored no votes across the state’s 20 local government areas.
Hunye subsequently instituted a legal challenge against the party and Adeola, seeking to nullify the primary over alleged irregularities and the disenfranchisement of his supporters after he was allocated zero votes.
However, speaking at the APC secretariat in Ipokia, party leaders and elected officials from all 12 wards in the local government, including Ogun State House of Assembly member Bisi Oyedele, said Hunye remained suspended and no longer represented the party.
APC Chairman in Ipokia LGA, Wasiu Onikoyi Agbetokun, said the party had “without equivocation” disassociated itself from Hunye, insisting that his recent actions and statements did not reflect the position of the party or its members.
Agbetokun said Hunye had ceased to be an APC member following his suspension over alleged anti-party activities.
He also dismissed Hunye’s argument that obtaining a nomination form after his suspension validated his participation in the process, saying disciplinary proceedings under the party’s constitution could still apply to aspirants and elected officials.
“No one, regardless of office or ambition, is above the party’s constitution and disciplinary framework,” Agbetokun said.
The Ipokia APC chairman further claimed that Hunye had never enjoyed significant support from Tube Ward, where he hails from, or the wider local government.
He accused the former aspirant of purchasing nomination forms during election cycles primarily as a means of negotiating for political appointments rather than genuinely contesting party primaries.
Agbetokun reaffirmed the local party’s support for Adeola, saying members remained united behind the senator’s candidacy ahead of the 2027 election.
He argued that Adeola’s acceptance across Ogun State offered an opportunity for Ogun West to produce the state’s governor for the first time since the creation of the state 50 years ago.
Also speaking, Bisi Oyedele, who represents Ipokia/Idiroko Constituency in the state assembly, alleged that Hunye was being sponsored to undermine Ogun West’s longstanding ambition to produce a governor.
“There’s something that we should make abundantly clear here, and it is that Mr. Abayomi Hunye, we believe from this local government, has been sponsored against the agenda of Yewa/Awori people,” Oyedele said.
The lawmaker alleged that Hunye was receiving financial backing to undermine Adeola’s candidacy but did not provide evidence for the claim.
Oyedele said the APC in Ipokia had therefore formally disowned Hunye and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Adeola in the 2027 governorship election.
