King Harald V of Norway, Europe’s oldest monarch and a widely respected figure who led the Norwegian royal family through more than three decades of social and economic change, has died at the age of 89.
The Norwegian royal palace said Harald died at the National Hospital in Oslo on Friday at 6:35 a.m. local time. His son automatically succeeds him as King Haakon VIII.
Harald had remained committed to his royal duties despite his advancing age, declining to follow several other European monarchs who chose to abdicate and hand the throne to younger generations.
Although Norway’s monarchy is largely ceremonial, the royal family remains an important national institution. Political authority in the country of about 5.5 million people rests with its democratically elected parliament and government.
Harald became king in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. His reign coincided with a period of extraordinary economic growth fueled largely by Norway’s oil and gas industry.
Born in 1937 in Asker, near Oslo, Harald became the first Norwegian prince born in the country in more than five centuries. Norway had spent centuries without its own monarch before Harald’s grandfather, Haakon VII, became king following the dissolution of Norway’s union with Sweden in 1905.
Harald’s childhood was shaped by World War II. He was just three years old when Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Norway. To prevent his capture, his mother fled with Harald and his sisters, Ragnhild and Astrid, first to Sweden and later by ship to the United States.
Meanwhile, his father and grandfather went into exile in Britain alongside Norway’s government, continuing their opposition to the Nazi occupation.
Harald later returned home and eventually became one of Norway’s longest-serving modern monarchs. He was also known for his determination to marry his childhood sweetheart despite pressure to choose a bride from European nobility, a decision that helped shape his image as a monarch willing to adapt the royal institution to a changing society.
