FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association, several Argentine players, an Argentine team official and a Spanish player following incidents surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.
The governing body of world football announced the decision on Wednesday in a statement published on its official website, saying it is investigating a series of alleged violations that occurred during the tournament.
Among the allegations against the Argentine Football Association are discriminatory chants and gestures, delayed kick-offs, failure to comply with match and security protocols, the display of inappropriate messages by players and supporters, and the throwing of objects by spectators during several of Argentina’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Before the final, Argentine players drew attention after their semifinal victory over England by displaying a banner asserting Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory.
FIFA has also opened disciplinary proceedings against several individuals over a physical confrontation that erupted on the field immediately after the World Cup Final on July 19.
Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time to secure the world title.
Following the final whistle, celebrations quickly turned chaotic as players from both teams became involved in an on-field altercation.
According to FIFA, disciplinary proceedings for alleged assault have been initiated against Argentine players Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes, as well as Argentine assistant coach Roberto Ayala.
Separate proceedings have also been opened against Molina, Argentine midfielder Thiago Almada and Spanish midfielder Pablo Martín Páez Gavira, widely known as Gavi, over allegations of unsporting behavior.
FIFA said those subject to the disciplinary process have been given the opportunity to respond to the allegations before the FIFA Disciplinary Committee reaches a final decision.
The organization did not indicate when rulings or any potential sanctions are expected to be announced.
