The Nigeria Customs Service has commenced the implementation of the Federal Government’s newly approved fiscal policy measures and tariff amendments for 2026, describing the reforms as part of efforts to stimulate economic growth, support local industries and improve trade administration.
The implementation follows comments by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, during the defence of the Service’s 2026 budget proposal before the National Assembly, where he said the revised import duty structure aligned with the Federal Government’s broader fiscal agenda.
In a statement, Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada said the amendments were introduced to encourage industrial expansion, simplify legitimate trade activities and strengthen customs and fiscal management.
According to him, the approved measures include the revised Import Adjustment Tax List for the implementation of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (2022–2027), the revised National List under the ECOWAS CET framework, an updated Import Prohibition List, a revised list of goods subject to excise duties, a Green Tax surcharge on vehicles with engine capacities above 2000cc and a revised Export Prohibition List.
Maiwada urged importers, exporters, manufacturers, licensed customs agents and other stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the new schedules and comply with all fiscal and regulatory requirements.
He added that the complete 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments have been made available on the Nigeria Customs Service website to promote transparency and facilitate smooth implementation.
Reaffirming the agency’s commitment to the reforms, he said the Service would continue supporting government policies while carrying out its responsibilities in trade facilitation, revenue generation and border security.
Maiwada stressed that close collaboration between Customs and stakeholders would be vital to the successful implementation of the reforms and to building a more competitive, transparent and sustainable economy.
