Mamdani-Backed Candidates Score Major Primary Wins in New York

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani strengthened his influence within the Democratic Party on Tuesday as all three of his endorsed congressional candidates secured victories in their primary races, advancing to the general election and unseating two incumbent members of Congress.

The results marked a significant political victory for Mamdani, demonstrating his growing sway over New York’s Democratic electorate and reshaping the political landscape ahead of November’s elections.

In New York’s 7th Congressional District, ABC News projected that state Assemblywoman Claire Valdez would defeat Antonio Reynoso to secure the Democratic nomination.

In the 10th Congressional District, former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, another candidate endorsed by Mamdani, was projected to defeat incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman.

Meanwhile, in the 13th Congressional District, community advocate Darializa Avila Chevalier was projected to defeat incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat, delivering another victory for the mayor’s preferred candidate.

The outcomes underscore Mamdani’s growing political influence less than a year into his tenure as mayor, with his endorsements helping propel a new generation of candidates into competitive general election races.

The New York contests were among several closely watched elections held across the country on Tuesday, alongside primary races in Maryland and Utah and runoff elections in South Carolina.

Political observers say the results could have broader implications for the future direction of the Democratic Party in New York, particularly as progressive and reform-minded candidates continue to challenge established political figures.

With all three endorsed candidates moving on to the November ballot, Tuesday’s results represent one of the most significant electoral successes yet for the Mamdani political coalition.
