Authorities in the United States and China have jointly arrested five suspects in an international smuggling and drug trafficking operation, Chinese officials announced Monday, highlighting rare law enforcement cooperation ahead of President Donald Trump’s upcoming state visit to Beijing.
According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, the operation involved collaboration between the Drug Enforcement Administration and China’s Ministry of Public Security. Authorities arrested three Americans and two Chinese nationals during coordinated raids spanning the U.S. states of Florida and Nevada, as well as China’s Liaoning and Guangdong provinces.
Officials said law enforcement agents also seized several illegal substances, including protonitazene and bromazolam.
U.S. authorities had not publicly confirmed the arrests as of Monday.
The announcement comes just days before a closely watched summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where efforts to curb the trafficking of fentanyl and other synthetic drugs are expected to be a major topic of discussion.
