Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a fresh wave of political realignments in the House of Representatives.
The defection, announced on Thursday, was part of a broader movement involving several lawmakers who left both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ADC and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
During plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read out letters of resignation, noting that the affected lawmakers cited internal crises and uncertainty within their former parties as reasons for their decisions.
Among those who joined the ADC were PDP lawmakers from Kaduna State, Umar Ajilo and Suleiman Yahaya Richifa.
The Speaker also announced further movements, including the defection of Kamilu Ado from Kano State, who moved from the ADC to the NDC.
Similarly, Joshua Obika, representing AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency of the Federal Capital Territory, resigned from the APC and joined the NDC.
In their separate letters, the lawmakers attributed their decisions to unresolved internal disputes and lack of stability within their former political parties.
Bello El-Rufai’s defection has attracted particular attention due to his political background and family influence in Kaduna politics. His move is widely seen as part of a broader realignment involving political actors linked to the former Kaduna State administration.
The development follows earlier defections of key figures associated with Nasir El-Rufai’s political network, including former commissioners and senior state officials.
The latest wave of defections underscores ongoing reshuffling within Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future elections, as parties continue to grapple with internal tensions and shifting alliances.
