Federal prosecutors and defense attorneys for former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have jointly proposed June 2027 as the trial date for the couple’s U.S. criminal case involving narco-terrorism and drug trafficking charges.

The proposed timeline was outlined in a court filing submitted Tuesday ahead of a scheduled hearing on Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein.

During the conference, Hellerstein is expected to consider a timetable covering pretrial motions, the disclosure of classified evidence and the proposed trial schedule.

Under the filing, Maduro’s legal team plans to submit a motion by September seeking dismissal of the case on the grounds of sovereign immunity.

Oral arguments on that motion are expected to take place in November, while additional pretrial motions from the defense would be due in January.

Prosecutors told the court they have already provided the defense with most of the non-classified evidence and expect to disclose the majority of the classified materials by November.

However, both the prosecution and defense reserved the right to seek a delay if necessary, with prosecutors noting that issues involving classified evidence could affect the proposed schedule.

Maduro and Flores last appeared in federal court in March, when their attorneys unsuccessfully sought to have the case dismissed.

The defense argued that the proceedings should be thrown out because U.S. Treasury Department sanctions had prevented the Venezuelan government from paying Maduro’s legal team.

The court rejected that request, allowing the prosecution to move forward.

If approved by the court, the proposed schedule would set the stage for one of the most closely watched international criminal proceedings involving a former foreign head of state in recent years.
