A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has said the 2027 presidential election is increasingly shaping up as a direct contest between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Showunmi made the remark during an interview on News Central Television on Thursday, where he assessed emerging political alignments ahead of the next general elections.
According to him, both Tinubu and Atiku remain the most dominant political figures with the experience and capacity to lead the country.
“In terms of who can lead the country, it is between Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar and one will obviously beat the other,” he said.
The former spokesperson to Atiku also referenced his past working relationship with the ex-vice president, saying it gave him deeper insight into Atiku’s political ideas and leadership intentions.
“I can dash Atiku some headroom because, don’t forget, I was his spokesperson two times back to back. So there are things I know that reside in his brain and his heart that he has not even told people,” Showunmi stated.
He also downplayed the prospects of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, arguing that Obi has not clearly articulated policy positions on key national issues.
“In the case of Peter Obi, I see absolutely zero. I’ve never heard him on security. I’ve not even heard him say anything on social stabilization of the country,” he said.
Showunmi noted that Nigeria’s political evolution since 2019 has been marked by attempts at restructuring governance and addressing national challenges, adding that the 2027 election would likely focus on economic and security solutions.
The comments come amid increasing political consultations and realignments among major political actors ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
