Several communities in Lagos have been thrown into darkness following a gas tanker explosion on the Lekki-Epe Expressway that left two people dead and caused widespread damage.
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company confirmed that the blast severely damaged key power infrastructure, including the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders, disrupting electricity supply across affected areas.
Communities hit by the outage include Sangotedo, Awoyaya, Eputu, Lakowe, and Elemoro, among others.
The explosion occurred after a speeding tipper truck rammed into a stationary gas tanker in the early hours of Saturday, igniting a massive fire that spread to nearby warehouses and shops.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the inferno destroyed multiple properties, including vehicles and business outlets, before it was eventually brought under control.
Two victims—the truck driver and his assistant—were burnt beyond recognition, while the gas tanker driver reportedly escaped unharmed.
Authorities say repair work is ongoing as efforts continue to restore power to the affected communities.
