Two Men Charged in U.K. with Spying for Iran on Jewish Community

British authorities have charged two men with conducting espionage activities on behalf of Iran, targeting the United Kingdom’s Jewish community, officials said.

Nematollah Shahsavani, 40, a dual Iranian-British national, and Alireza Farasati, 22, an Iranian citizen, face charges of engaging in conduct intended to assist a foreign intelligence service. Prosecutors confirmed that the alleged activities were linked to Iran.

According to Frank Ferguson, the head of counterterrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, the charges involve gathering intelligence and conducting surveillance on potential targets within the U.K.

Both suspects, who reside in London, are scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The men were arrested on March 6 as part of a broader investigation. Two additional British-Iranian nationals detained during the same operation have since been released without charge.

The case comes amid ongoing concerns about Iranian-linked activities in Britain. Ken McCallum, head of the U.K.’s domestic intelligence agency MI5, said in October that authorities had disrupted more than 20 potentially lethal plots tied to Iran over the past year.
