Unlikely Alliance: Trump Engages Progressives to Advance Credit Card and Housing Reforms

President Donald Trump is seeking unexpected political partners as he introduces a new policy agenda aimed at tackling Americans’ affordability concerns and strengthening Republican prospects ahead of the midterm elections — including outreach to progressive lawmakers.

On Monday, Trump called Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts following her speech criticizing Democrats for being overly aligned with wealthy donors, according to both Warren and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Warren said she used the call to press Trump on economic reforms. “I delivered this same message on affordability to him directly,” she said. “I told him Congress can pass legislation to cap credit card interest rates if he is willing to fight for it. I also urged him to push House Republicans to approve the bipartisan ROAD to Housing Act, which passed the Senate unanimously and would expand housing supply and lower costs.”

In recent days, Trump has revived a campaign pledge to cap credit card interest rates at 10%, a proposal he failed to advance during his first year in office. He has also vowed to prohibit large investment firms from purchasing residential housing and instructed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to commit $200 billion toward mortgage bond investments.
