World heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious road accident on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State, with two fatalities confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly after 11am near Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane. According to eyewitnesses, the convoy conveying the boxer collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are still being investigated.
Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV alongside three other occupants when the crash happened. A second vehicle in the convoy, a Pajero SUV, was carrying his security detail and was behind the Lexus at the time of the accident.
An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, told PUNCH Online that rescue efforts began immediately after the crash as bystanders flagged down vehicles to assist victims trapped in the wreckage.

“It was a two-vehicle convoy. Joshua was seated behind the driver. There were four people in the Lexus. After the crash, we started rescue efforts before the FRSC arrived,” Orojo said.
He confirmed that two occupants of the Lexus died on the spot, while Joshua and another passenger sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital for treatment. Joshua’s injuries were described as not life-threatening.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene minutes later to take control of rescue operations and traffic management.
Videos of the crash scene circulated widely on social media, drawing concern from fans and members of the public as investigations commenced.
Efforts to reach the Ogun State TRACE Command for further details were unsuccessful as calls were not returned. However, the Ogun State Police Command later confirmed the incident.
In a brief follow-up, police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that two persons lost their lives, while Anthony Joshua and one other victim were hospitalised and are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed facility.
Authorities say further updates will be provided as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
