The legendary entertainer, whose decades-long career has earned him Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and Lifetime Achievement honors, spoke with Chris Connelly about reaching the century mark and about his new book, which offers reflections and advice on longevity.
The interview, conducted at Van Dyke’s Malibu, California, home alongside his wife, Arlene Silver, will air Friday on Good Morning America.
Reflecting on his long career, Van Dyke joked about often portraying elderly characters on screen.
“I played old men a lot, and I always played them as angry and cantankerous,” he said with a laugh. “It’s not really that way.”
“I don’t know any other 100-year-old,” he added, “but I can speak for myself.”
As he approaches his birthday on Dec. 13, Van Dyke said he remains in good health and largely free of physical discomfort.
“I’m so lucky. I don’t have any ache or pain,” he said.
Van Dyke credited his active lifestyle — including working out at the gym three times a week — and praised Silver for encouraging healthy habits.
“She’s a health nut,” he said. “I think that saved me from the pain. That’s good advice for anybody.”
