Obasanjo Says Nigeria Needs Long-Term Policies Beyond Election Cycles

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for the adoption of policies that endure beyond electoral cycles, insisting that Nigeria cannot overcome its long-standing challenges without long-term strategic planning and principled leadership.

Obasanjo delivered the message virtually on Tuesday while speaking at the Second Bi-Annual Honours Awards and Dinner of the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Lagos chapter, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja. The former president, who received a Special Recognition Award, commended the institute’s alumni for their contributions to national development.

Addressing the audience, Obasanjo urged policymakers and professionals to uphold values that strengthen governance. He said:
“Remain committed to integrity and principles. Good policy is rooted in honesty, courage, and the willingness to prioritise national interest above short-term or partisan gains. Think strategically and long term. Nigeria’s problems require vision, patience, and the ability to design policies that endure beyond electoral cycles.”

He further encouraged leaders to dedicate time to developing the next generation, stressing that national progress depends on the quality of mentorship provided to young Nigerians.
“Invest time in young Nigerians. Build their capacity, teach them ethical leadership, and encourage their participation in public service,” he said.

Obasanjo also called for a shift from personality-driven governance to institution-driven systems, maintaining that resilient, transparent, and accountable institutions are critical to sustainable development.
“Be a voice for unity, inclusive development, and peaceful democratic practice. Where there is division, use your training to mediate and build bridges,” he added.

The former president concluded by thanking the NIPSS alumni for the honour bestowed on him, saying:
“May this event be successful, and may the institute continue to produce the wise, courageous, and committed leaders our country so badly needs. May God bless you all and bless Nigeria.”
