The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally issued certificates of expulsion to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyelsom Wike; former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose; immediate past National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu; and eight other members.
The expulsions were effected during the party’s National Convention held in Ibadan on November 15. PDP’s newly appointed National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, announced the issuance of the certificates yesterday after officially taking over from the Umar Damagun-led leadership.
Turaki explained that the certificates are meant to facilitate the expelled members’ registration with other political parties, noting that Nigerian law prohibits dual party membership.
“We have considered the issue of members of our party who were expelled by the National Convention in Ibadan. Nigerian law frowns at dual membership of political parties, so we have sought to make it easier for them,” he said.
“Now that they are no longer members of our party, and the National Convention the highest decision-making organ of the PDP has expelled them, we have decided to issue them certificates of expulsion. This will allow them to register with other parties without accusations of belonging to more than one political party,” Turaki added.
The move underscores the PDP’s efforts to ensure legal compliance while clarifying the political status of former members seeking to engage in other party platforms.
