The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described Saturday’s bye-elections in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states as crucial operational tests ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, said every bye-election provides the Commission with an opportunity to assess its preparedness, identify weaknesses and improve its electoral processes.

Amupitan spoke while monitoring the elections from INEC’s National Situation Room at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Adedayo Oketola.

The four legislative bye-elections were held in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency of Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies of Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency of Delta State.

The INEC chairman said no electoral exercise should be treated as routine, stressing that every election forms part of the Commission’s broader preparations for the 2027 general elections.

“These four bye-elections provide indispensable operational lessons for the Commission as we systematically chart our roadmap toward the 2027 General Election,” he said.

According to Amupitan, the exercises enabled INEC to audit its logistics framework, stress-test its technological deployment and assess administrative readiness in the field.

He said the Situation Room monitored reports from the various locations as voting progressed, while operational bottlenecks identified before polling were promptly addressed.

“Our primary mandate in the Situation Room is monitoring and proactive crisis resolution.

“Whatever administrative or field challenges arose before the day of the elections, the Commission was able to nip them in the bud effectively.

“We remain committed to refining our processes so that every subsequent exercise reflects higher standards of efficiency and public confidence.”

Amupitan, who was accompanied by National Commissioners and senior management officials, commended the Situation Room team, particularly its technical personnel, for facilitating the monitoring of the multi-state elections and assessing field performance.

He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to using every electoral exercise to strengthen its systems and improve its readiness for the 2027 general elections.
