Trump to Meet NYC Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday night that he will meet with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House this Friday, marking the first official encounter between the two since Mamdani’s upset victory earlier this month.

“Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st,” Trump wrote on social media.

Mamdani’s transition team later confirmed the meeting, framing it as a routine part of the mayoral handover process.

“As is customary for an incoming administration, the Mayor-elect will meet with the President to discuss public safety, economic security, and the affordability agenda that over one million New Yorkers voted for,” spokesperson Dora Pekec said.

The announcement follows Trump’s comments on Sunday suggesting the two would “work something out” despite months of escalating political tension.

Trump has repeatedly attacked Mamdani throughout the campaign, branding the democratic socialist a “communist,” predicting disaster for New York if he won, and even threatening to deport the Uganda-born, naturalized American citizen. He also warned he might withhold federal funds from the city under Mamdani’s leadership.

Mamdani, who surged from little-known state legislator to national social-media prominence, defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo by nearly nine points with a campaign grounded in progressive policies and sharp opposition to Trump’s aggressive anti-immigrant agenda.

On election night, the 34-year-old told supporters he wanted New York to show the nation how to “defeat the president.” But he struck a more pragmatic tone the following day, saying he would work with “anyone—including President Trump—if it helps New Yorkers.”

Trump said additional details about Friday’s meeting will be released soon.
