The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has announced that the Council of State will hold its next meeting in Abuja on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
In a statement released by the SGF’s office, the meeting will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing both physical and virtual participation. On the same day, the Police Council will also meet at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Council of State, Nigeria’s highest advisory body to the President, plays a vital role in endorsing key national appointments, including the nomination of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Its membership comprises all living former Presidents and Heads of State, former Chief Justices, and the current state governors.
A statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office, stated:
“The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, CON, has extended an invitation to members of the Council of State and Police Council to a hybrid strategic meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025. According to the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, Dr. Emanso Okop Umobong, the meeting aims to discuss matters of national importance and key issues affecting national security and policing.”
The statement emphasized that the back-to-back sessions underscore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to addressing pressing national challenges and strengthening internal security across the country.
This will be Tinubu’s second Council of State meeting since assuming office. The first, held on August 13, 2024, was attended by former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and the late Muhammadu Buhari, where participants expressed confidence in the administration and deliberated on key national matters.
