Obasa Eyes Senate or Governorship, Defers to Party Decision

Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has indicated that he is open to contesting for either a senatorial or gubernatorial position, depending on his party’s decision.

Obasa made the disclosure on Thursday during an interview with Television Continental, addressing previous remarks about his political ambitions. He emphasised that while his interest in higher office remains valid, any move would follow party consensus.

“Every politician has ambitions, but you get to a stage where you cannot determine what comes next. If you believe in the party structure, you understand that it’s about consultation, consensus, and the leadership’s direction,” Obasa said.

He noted that personal aspirations are legitimate, but final decisions must reflect the party’s strategic considerations. The Speaker also hinted that he may not seek another term in the assembly. When asked about pursuing a fifth term as a legislator, he responded, “Not really,” suggesting his focus is shifting toward higher political roles.

Obasa’s remarks come amid growing speculation over possible successors to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose second term ends in 2027. He has served as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015, recently overcoming a leadership crisis that temporarily unseated him.
