NCAA Petitions AGF, IGP Over Kwam 1’s Alleged Aviation Safety Breach

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has called on the attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and the inspector-general of police (IGP) to launch a criminal investigation into popular Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, widely known as Kwam 1 or K1 De Ultimate, over an alleged safety breach involving ValueJet airline.

In a statement on Thursday, Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, said the incident, which occurred aboard scheduled ValueJet flight VK201, disrupted standard operating procedures and violated aviation safety protocols under the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig. CARs).

“While full details of the incident are still being compiled, the NCAA has emphasized the importance of upholding aviation safety standards and ensuring accountability, regardless of the parties involved,” the statement read.

The authority confirmed that it had written to the AGF and IGP requesting a comprehensive investigation and prosecution in line with Nig. CARs 2023 and other relevant laws.

Capt. Chris Najomo, director general of civil aviation, has also issued an advisory to the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), urging them to consider placing Kwam 1 on a no-fly list for any commercial flight pending the outcome of the probe. Achimugu noted that the recommendation aligns with global best practices prioritising passenger, crew, and operational safety.

The NCAA stressed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the aviation industry, warning that no individual, regardless of social standing, would be allowed to undermine safety protocols.

This development follows the suspension of two ValueJet pilots over a safety breach at the domestic terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja an incident linked to Kwam 1’s alleged disorderly conduct onboard.

Earlier, Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, had directed the NCAA to place the musician on a no-fly list pending the conclusion of investigations, warning both domestic and international airlines to comply or risk losing their operating licences.
