The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to providing stable and uninterrupted electricity to Nigerians, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, gave the assurance over the weekend during the commissioning of the Kwaru 1X15 MVA 33/11KV Injection Substation in Ikotun-Egbe, Lagos.
Adelabu said the new substation would significantly enhance power supply to communities such as Abaranje, Isijola, Igando Road, Omoboriowo, Okerube, and neighbouring areas. He noted that the facility will reduce operational difficulties, boost small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), stimulate local economies, and create jobs.
“The Tinubu-led administration recognises that energy is not just a commodity it is the backbone of economic growth and job creation. We are fully committed to delivering reliable electricity across the country within the lifetime of this administration,” Adelabu said.
The Minister outlined recent milestones under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including:
· Passage of the Electricity Act 2023, decentralising the sector and enabling 12 state electricity markets.
· First National Integrated Electricity Policy in 24 years.
· Attraction of over $2 billion in new investments to expand electricity access.
· 70% rise in sector revenue in 2024 due to commercialisation efforts.
On power generation, Adelabu revealed that Nigeria’s installed capacity has grown from 13GW to 14GW, with a new all-time peak of 5,801.44 MW and a daily energy delivery record of 128,370.75 MWh, achieved on March 4, 2025.
He also highlighted progress on critical infrastructure:
· Stabilisation of the national grid via the Siemens Project, adding over 700 MW of transmission capacity.
· ₦700 billion mobilised from FAAC for the Presidential Metering Initiative.
· Deployment of 3.45 million new meters nationwide under the $500 million World Bank DISREP fund.
While acknowledging challenges in the distribution segment including high loss levels, poor market remittances, and persistent customer complaints Adelabu pledged closer collaboration with Distribution Companies (DisCos) to improve performance and customer satisfaction.
He praised Ikeja Electric for completing the Kwaru substation within 12 months and described the company as one of Nigeria’s leading DisCos.
“We urge them to continue expanding access and improving service delivery,” he added.
The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for all initiatives aimed at enhancing energy reliability, affordability, and access nationwide.
