The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appeared to ease on Monday after the party’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting officially reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.
Addressing journalists at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja after the meeting, Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, confirmed the decision.
“We’ve all combined and we were all together, and we all agree that Senator Anyanwu will continue to act as National Secretary,” Damagum said.
The move signals a possible thaw in the long-standing internal dispute that followed the party’s loss in the 2023 presidential election, during which Anyanwu’s position had become a major point of division within the National Working Committee (NWC) and across several state chapters.
Damagum also disclosed that the 101st NEC meeting has been scheduled for July 23, where further decisions will be made regarding the party’s national convention. However, he did not announce a specific date for the convention itself.
“At that time, we will be able to convene a proper NEC, where myself and Senator Anyanwu will sign, which is to fulfill the regulatory requirement of INEC in convening meetings,” Damagum added.
The resolution to reinstate Anyanwu is seen as part of broader efforts to stabilise the party and move toward internal reconciliation and reorganisation ahead of the next electoral cycle.
