National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has issued a firm warning to political actors and their supporters, declaring zero tolerance for electoral violence ahead of the August bye-elections and the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State.
Speaking during the second regular meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in Abuja, Ribadu represented by Hassan Abdullahi, Director of Internal Security at the NSA’s office said security agencies have been directed to intensify surveillance and intelligence gathering to counter threats against the electoral process.
“The government will not hesitate to take decisive action against any individuals or groups attempting to disrupt elections,” Abdullahi said, adding that areas vulnerable to political interference or subversion will receive special attention.
He also announced that the security arm of ICCES will enhance real-time intelligence-sharing, particularly in states facing challenges from non-state actors. Political parties will be engaged continuously to reduce tension and ensure peaceful campaigns.
“Political actors and their supporters are hereby warned to conduct themselves responsibly. Electoral violence and malpractice will not be tolerated,” he warned.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, also addressed the meeting, unveiling the commission’s electoral schedule. He announced that 16 bye-elections will be conducted in 12 states on August 16, while Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will begin with online pre-registration on August 18 and in-person registration from August 25.
Yakubu also confirmed that court-ordered rerun elections in Enugu and Kano previously marred by violence will now proceed on August 16, following new security guarantees.
He urged security agencies to ensure the protection of electoral personnel, materials, and voters throughout the period.
