80 Detained After Pro-Palestinian Protest at Columbia University Sparks Police Intervention

Eighty individuals were taken into custody on Wednesday following a pro-Palestinian protest at Columbia University’s Butler Library that escalated into a tense standoff with law enforcement.

University officials said the NYPD was called in after students refused to leave the building or identify themselves. A crowd had attempted to force its way into the library, prompting safety concerns.

“Given the size of the disruption, a growing safety hazard, and the presence of individuals not affiliated with Columbia, we made the decision to request NYPD assistance,” said Acting University President Claire Shipman.

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the police response was initiated at the university’s written request, stating, “New York City supports peaceful protest, but we will not tolerate lawlessness.” He emphasized that those not enrolled at Columbia and participating in campus protests would be arrested.

Several protesters were led away in flex cuffs, and charges are pending. While some may receive summonses, others could face criminal charges, especially after two campus public safety officers were reportedly injured.

According to police, the majority of those arrested were not affiliated with Columbia.

A witness reported that demonstrators inside the library defaced property and disrupted order by removing books from shelves.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul commented on the incident via social media: “Everyone has the right to protest, but vandalism and destruction of property is unacceptable.”

Following the incident, access to Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus has been restricted to ID holders and approved guests.

The university has faced waves of unrest over the Israel-Hamas war. Last April, student demonstrators seized Hamilton Hall, leading to arrests and disciplinary action. In March, Columbia agreed to policy changes under pressure from President Donald Trump’s administration, which had threatened to withhold $400 million in federal funding.
