Mojisola Meranda has stepped down as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, just 49 days after assuming the role, clearing the way for the reinstatement of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa.
Meranda took office on January 13 following Obasa’s impeachment by lawmakers. However, during Monday’s plenary session, which she presided over for the last time, members of the House praised her leadership before she officially resigned.
Obasa’s return comes after a series of high-level meetings involving key stakeholders, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Crucial deliberations took place on Sunday night and Monday within the assembly premises, with APC State Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi in attendance.
The plenary session, initially set for 1 PM, was delayed due to the closed-door discussions before the House reconvened to formalize the leadership transition.
