A cargo plane operated for DHL by the Spanish airline Swiftair crashed near Vilnius airport in Lithuania early Monday, killing one crew member and injuring three others.
The Boeing 737-400 was on its final approach for landing when it went down near a residential area, local authorities said. Twelve people were safely evacuated from a nearby house that sustained minor damage in the crash.
The plane, which departed from DHL’s hub in Leipzig, Germany, shortly after 03:00 local time (02:00 GMT), crashed approximately 1.3 km (0.8 miles) north of the Vilnius airport runway about an hour and a half into its flight, according to flight-tracking data from Flightradar24.
Emergency services confirmed that all occupants of the flight had been accounted for. Firefighters were seen battling smoke from a building close to the crash site, while flight operations at Vilnius airport continued unaffected.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Renatas Pozela, head of Lithuania’s firefighting and emergency services, said the plane made an “emergency landing” before crashing a few kilometers short of the runway.
Initial reports suggest no explosion occurred prior to impact. Weather conditions at the time included temperatures near freezing, overcast skies, and winds of approximately 30 km/h (19 mph).
DHL confirmed ownership of the aircraft and stated it was 31 years old. The company expressed condolences and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers inherent in aviation, even for routine cargo operations, as authorities work to uncover what went wrong.
