President Donald Trump placed himself at the center of the Republican Party’s midterm campaign on Wednesday, urging supporters at the GOP convention in Dallas to vote in November as though he were personally on the ballot.

“We’re running together,” Trump told supporters during his address. “This is the most important election of your lives.”

Speaking on the opening night of the Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention, Trump called on voters to help the GOP retain control of Congress and overcome the historical tendency for a sitting president’s party to lose congressional seats during midterm elections.

“I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot,” Trump said, repeatedly telling the crowd that he was effectively running alongside Republican candidates.

During the speech, Trump highlighted what he described as the accomplishments of the first two years of his current term and criticized Democrats as he sought to energize Republican voters ahead of the November elections.

“This has been the most successful two years, financially and every other way, in the history of the presidency,” Trump said.

One of the most significant announcements of the night was Trump’s pledge to provide a $5,000 payment to every American adult if Republicans retain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Trump described the proposed payment as a “dividend” tied to the country’s economic performance. However, he did not provide details on how the payments would be funded or implemented.

With approximately 270 million adults in the United States, such a program could cost about $1.35 trillion, according to a Reuters estimate. Questions also remain about what congressional authorization or other legal steps would be required to implement the proposal.

Trump’s speech underscored his prominent role in the Republican midterm strategy as the party seeks to mobilize its supporters and maintain control of Congress in the November 3 elections.
