Nigeria Launches Free Cesarean Section Initiative to Combat Maternal Mortality

The Federal Ministry of Health has unveiled a new initiative offering free cesarean sections to poor and vulnerable women across Nigeria. The initiative, named the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), was launched at the Joint Annual Health Review (JAR) held in Abuja.

Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, described MAMII as a bold effort to reduce maternal and newborn deaths nationwide. He emphasized that the initiative would cover cesarean section services for eligible women at both public and private healthcare facilities approved by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). By eliminating the financial barriers to this crucial medical procedure, MAMII ensures that women in need receive life-saving care.

Addressing the high rates of maternal mortality in the country, with 172 local governments accounting for more than half of maternal deaths, Prof. Pate explained that the program would focus resources on these high-burden areas. He also stated that the NHIA, in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and State Health Insurance Agencies, would manage the reimbursement process, ensuring that services remain sustainable.

Prof. Pate further highlighted the importance of community health workers in the initiative. As part of President Bola Tinubu’s plan to onboard 120,000 additional health workers, these workers will play a key role in raising awareness about maternal care, educating families on antenatal services, and facilitating access to healthcare, particularly in rural and underserved regions.

Additionally, the revitalization of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System is set to provide timely transport for emergencies, ensuring that medical care reaches those in need, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

The MAMII initiative marks a decisive step toward improving Nigeria’s maternal and newborn health outcomes by increasing access to care, promoting demand for services, and removing financial obstacles to treatment. Through these efforts, Nigeria aims to build a healthcare system that is both accessible and affordable for all, ensuring no mother or child is left behind.
