NASU, SSANU Suspend Strike as Government Pledges Partial Salary Release

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have suspended their indefinite strike for one month, beginning Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The decision follows the government’s partial commitment to address their demands for unpaid salaries.

In a joint statement signed by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions acknowledged the resilience of their members, who began the strike on October 28, 2024. “The strike was necessitated by the government’s continued disregard for our members’ legitimate demands,” the statement read. “We appreciate the determination shown by our members in universities and inter-university centers throughout this industrial action.”

The unions reported that extensive discussions with top government officials, including the Minister of Education, Minister of Finance, and the Accountant-General, yielded an agreement. The Federal Government committed to release two out of four months’ withheld salaries in staggered payments, with one month by the end of October 2024—mostly fulfilled—and the second by the end of November 2024.

In preparation for resumption, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) has directed NASU and SSANU branches to hold congresses on Monday, November 4, to inform members of the developments and prepare them for work resumption on Tuesday. The unions also highlighted ongoing negotiations for the remaining two months’ salaries, a N50 billion Earned Allowances fund, arrears of 25/35 percent, and the Wage Award.
