Federal Subpoena Targets NYC Asylum Office Director Amid Growing Scrutiny of Mayor Adams’ Administration

Federal prosecutors have issued a subpoena to Molly Schaeffer, the director of New York City’s Office of Asylum Seeker Operations, as scrutiny of Mayor Eric Adams’ administration intensifies.

Schaeffer received the request from federal authorities on Friday morning, according to a source who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. The purpose of the subpoena and whether it relates to multiple ongoing federal investigations into Adams, a first-term Democrat and former police captain, remains unclear.

Schaeffer directed inquiries to Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy, who declined to comment on the investigation. “We expect all team members to fully comply with any ongoing inquiry,” Levy stated. He confirmed Schaeffer’s important role in the team and her dedication to serving New Yorkers.

There are currently no allegations of wrongdoing against Schaeffer. Subpoenas are often issued as part of evidence gathering and do not necessarily imply that the recipient is suspected of a crime.

Attempts to reach the U.S. attorney’s offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn for comment went unanswered.

Earlier this month, federal agents seized phones from several of the mayor’s top advisers, including the schools chancellor and two deputy mayors, as well as the police commissioner, Edward Caban, who resigned last week. These actions are believed to be part of investigations by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, focusing in part on whether the relatives of senior aides exploited their connections for financial gain.

In July, Adams himself received a subpoena for information regarding his activities, campaign, and City Hall, which followed an FBI seizure of his devices at a Manhattan event. The subpoena sought details about his schedule, international travel, and potential links to the Turkish government.

As of now, Adams has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
