Buhari Signs A Bill To Increase Retirement Age For Nigerian Teachers

The National Assembly recently passed four bills, including the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act, 2022, which was signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act of 2022, the National Biotechnology Development Agency Act of 2022, and the Federal Medical Center Act, Hong (Establishment), 2022 are among the others.

Garba Shehu, the president’s press adviser, stated this in an Abuja statement on Friday.

The Teachers’ Retirement Age Harmonized Act, he claims, establishes the retirement age for teachers in Nigeria.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved in January 2021 a new bill to increase the retirement age of teachers in the country. In June of that year, the president sent the bill to the National Assembly.

“Section 1 of the Act clearly states that teachers in Nigeria will take compulsory retirement upon reaching 65 years of age or 40 years of pensionable service, whichever comes first.

“While the provision of Section 3 of the Act states that the Public Service Rule or any Legislation requiring a person to retire from the Public Service at 60 years of age or after 35 years of Service shall not apply to Teachers in Nigeria”.

On the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022, Mr. Shehu said that it repeals the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, Cap. N118, Nigerian Federation Laws 2004 and Enact the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022.

He said that this was intended to facilitate the effective implementation of the Commission’s Law Reform Proposals and improve its performance and bring the Law into line with best practices.

On the National Biotechnology Development Agency Act, 2022, the presidential adviser said:

“This Act provides a legal framework for the National Biotechnology Development Agency to conduct research, create and develop public awareness of biotechnology to encourage private sector participation in the biotechnology industry in Nigeria.”

Mr. Shehu also revealed that the president gave his consent to the Federal Medical Center, Hong (Establishment) Act, 2022.

“This Act establishes the Federal Medical Center, Hong, Adamawa State to provide a legal framework for its proper management and administration.

“The Medical Center will be headed by a Medical Director who will be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Minister of Health, and will be the Executive Director and Accountant of the Medical Center as stipulated in Section 9 of the Act.”

Mr. Shehu said that Umar El-Yakub, the Speaker’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA) for National Assembly (House of Representatives) Affairs, was present at the State House for the bill signing.
