Sowore, Malami Clash in Court as EFCC Trial Rekindles Old Rivalry

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, confronted former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, reigniting tensions between the two figures.

The exchange occurred ahead of proceedings in a 16-count money laundering charge filed against Malami by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a video that has since circulated widely online, Sowore mocked Malami, stating: “You see how it feels now to be persecuted… we warned you then that there is failure in the justice system, but you didn’t listen.” He also offered him a symbolic “Revolution Now” cap—associated with his protest movement—suggesting the former minister was now experiencing the system’s flaws firsthand.

Despite the criticism, Sowore acknowledged Malami’s resilience, saying he was “glad that you are strong,” while insisting the justice system affects both critics and former officials. “We are not all on the same side… even the oppressors are oppressing you now,” he added.

Responding briefly, Malami dismissed any notion of weakness, maintaining that he remains committed to the legal process. “I can never be down… I have been attending all my court sittings and I will keep attending,” he said, while rejecting the offered cap.

The confrontation revisits a long-standing dispute dating back to 2019, when Sowore was arrested by security agencies over his “Revolution Now” campaign during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari.

Malami, who served as Attorney-General from 2015 to 2023, is currently facing prosecution over alleged financial crimes, although earlier charges relating to terrorism financing against him and his son were dropped.

The brief but tense exchange also touched on politics, with Malami confirming his continued involvement in opposition activities amid shifting dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
