Obafemi Hamzat, deputy governor of Lagos State, has pledged to serve with integrity, focus, and a clear sense of purpose if elected governor in 2027, following his endorsement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as the “best man for the job” and offered prayers for his deputy, wishing him strength, peace, and divine support. In a symbolic moment at the Government House, Marina, the governor embraced Hamzat and raised his hand before party leaders and members, drawing applause from attendees.
In a post on his X page, Hamzat expressed gratitude for the endorsement, noting that it meant “a great deal” to him.
“Today, I am honoured by the endorsement of my Governor, my brother and my friend… His trust means a great deal to me,” he said, adding that he remains committed to building on the progress made in the state.
The endorsement followed a consultative meeting attended by members of the state executive council, Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and other key stakeholders. Sanwo-Olu said the decision to back his deputy was unanimous, citing Hamzat’s experience, loyalty, and commitment to governance.
“He is a man who is fit and well-prepared for this job. He is a man who knows where all the rooms in the house are,” the governor said.
Ahead of the meeting, Hamzat had consulted widely with party leaders, including former governor Babatunde Fashola and other stakeholders, receiving broad support.
The development strengthens Hamzat’s position as a leading contender for the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 6, 2027 governorship election.
However, the race remains open. Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), a former governorship candidate, has dismissed claims that the party has settled for a preferred aspirant, stating that no formal decision has been made.
Other figures reportedly eyeing the race include former governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Hakeem Muri-Okunola.
