2027: Obi, Southeast Leaders Hold Talks With Jonathan

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, alongside prominent South-East political leaders, has held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, which took place on Monday evening at Jonathan’s residence, brought together key figures including former Enugu State governor Okwesilieze Nwodo, former Imo State governor Achike Udenwa, former NDDC Managing Director Onyema Ugochukwu, and Senator Victor Umeh, among others.

Obi, who is reportedly preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said the delegation met Jonathan as part of wider consultations on the political future of Nigeria.

Speaking after the meeting, Obi said Jonathan expressed support for free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, stressing that Nigeria must not become a one-party state.

“He wished that we have free, fair, credible elections. There can’t be a one-party system. Nobody can claim to be more of a democrat than him,” Obi said.

He clarified that the visit was not for endorsement, but consultation, noting that such engagements are part of broader discussions with former leaders like Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida.

“We are consulting him because of his experience and his service to the country. He served Nigeria faithfully and understands democracy,” Obi added.

The meeting comes amid growing political realignments and early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
